The Chairman, Victims Centre, Gambia Sheriff Kijera has called for the suspension of the Health Minister and other relevant authorities, for fair probe into the death of the 70 children linked to Acute Kidney Injury (AKI).
“We called on the President (Barrow) to suspend the Health Minister and the Board, and the head of the Medicines Control Agency because investigations are ongoing. Because they are the ones in charge of the health sector, otherwise they will tamper with the evidence,” Kijera told the media.
He added that they should all be suspended until when investigations into the matter are done.
Meanwhile, the Gambia Police Force has announced constituting a panel to investigate the cause of the deaths, so as the National Assembly.
In early October, the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed the mass death of Gambian children is linked syrups imported from India.
The cough syrups were manufactured by New Delhi-based firm, Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd, which has since had one of its factories shut down in northern India, pending investigation by the Indian authorities, according to reports.
