Role of Clerk, Speaker “disappointing”: Ya Kumba on her sacking

“I received a call asking me to return my vehicle to the Office of the President and I told the person that this vehicle was given to me by the National Assembly and if I am to return, I will return it to the National Assembly…,” Ya Kumba Jaiteh told Kerr Fatou.

The nominated lawmaker who has been “dismissed” from the lawmaking body, Ya Kumba Jaiteh, has described the reaction of the Speaker Mariama Denton and Clerk Momodou Ceesay to her sacking as “quite disappointing”.

Jaiteh, a United Democratic Party executive member among the five people nominated into the Assembly, has had her nomination revoked by the president.

No explanation was advanced for the decision and Jaiteh had already challenged the revocation of her nomination at the Supreme Court.

In an exclusive interview with Kerr Fatou, Kumba said the speaker and the clerk should have been the first people to have taken this case to court since they are the administrators of the lawmaking body.

“The role of the Speaker and the Clerk are quite disappointing because I think it is the role of the Speaker and the Clerk to ensure that if there is a dispute, before I even go to court, the fact that I am insisting that I am still a National Assembly member and have not vacated my seat, they are the ones who should have taken this matter to court to seek for clarification because they are the administrators of the Assembly,” said Jaiteh.

“The fact that the Speaker and the Clerk seem to be implementing an executive decision is quite very disappointing…”

Kumba said her sacking was an interference by the executive into the work of the National Assembly.
