Police guard SSHFC headquarters as MD set to resume on Tuesday

At least eight paramilitary officials were dispatched to the headquarters of the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC) on Monday to reportedly protect the institution against disruption of staff who are unhappy with managing director Muhammed Manjang.

At least two armed with an AK47 rifle and crowd control gears, the police are seated at the two main entrances of the institution. Four were seen at each main entrance.

Landing Nyass, the public relations officer of the institution, told Kerr Fatou that Manjang will mostly likely resume on Tuesday.

It is not clear why Manjang was not at work on Monday but the presidency reinstated him on Friday following a 3-month suspension.

The former MD and staff representative on the SSHFC board Momodou Camara were suspended by President Adama Barrow after tensions emerged between Manjang and the staff of the institution.

The staff accused Manjang of per diem fraud and sending one Aisha Bayo to study in Ghana without proper consideration of the institution’s regulations.

An independent panel was then constituted to investigate the incident after both Manjang and Camara were suspended.

Following the investigation, the panel recommended for Manajng to resume work and Camara to be fired.

Last week, President Barrow upheld the recommendations of the panel.

And though there is no sign of tension on social security headquarters on Monday, rumours did the rounds on Friday that some staff unhappy with the president’s decision were planning to disrupt work.

At the height of the tension some months ago, the staff had once closed down the headquarters and prevent anyone from accessing the building.
