Today, members of the National Assembly will engage in a pivotal debate surrounding the Women’s Amendment Bill, a piece of legislation that has sparked widespread anticipation and controversy.

The bill, which aims to reconsider the ban on female genital mutilation/circumcision (FGM/C), was introduced by the National Assembly member for Foni Kansala Constituency on March 4, 2024.

The National Assembly premises are currently abuzz with activity as supporters and opponents of the bill gather in anticipation of the debate. Both camps, representing pro-FGM and anti-FGM perspectives, are well represented within the chambers of the National Assembly.

At the heart of the debate is the proposed reversal of the ban on female circumcision in The Gambia. This practice holds deep roots in the ethnic, traditional, cultural, and religious fabric of Gambian society.

According to proponents of the bill, the existing ban on female circumcision infringes upon citizens’ rights to uphold their cultural and religious practices as enshrined in the Constitution. However, opponents contend that FGM/C poses significant risks to the well-being of women and children, advocating for the retention of the ban to protect vulnerable individuals.
