Four senior officials of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), including former National Assembly Member Hon. Omar Ceesay and the party’s Administrative Secretary I, Ebrima Nyang, walked out of a recent executive meeting after objecting to the party’s decision to join the National People’s Party (NPP)-led alliance, according to senior party sources familiar with the deliberations.
The walkout came during what sources described as lengthy and at times contentious discussions over whether the GDC should align with President Adama Barrow’s governing coalition ahead of The Gambia’s Dec. 5, 2026, presidential election.
Despite the objections, the proposal to join the alliance was approved, though not unanimously, exposing divisions within the party’s leadership over its electoral strategy.
According to the sources, those who left the meeting in protest were Ebrima Nyang, the GDC’s Administrative Secretary I; Hon. Omar Ceesay, the party’s former National Assembly Member for Niamina East and a member of its executive; Essa Baldeh, an executive member dealing with the party’s Finance; and Kebba Gaye, another executive member.
The sources said the four officials opposed the proposed alliance with the NPP and exited the meeting before its conclusion.
The internal disagreements emerged as the GDC prepared to formalize its political partnership with the ruling party. According to the sources, GDC Party Leader and Secretary General Mama Kandeh is expected to meet President Adama Barrow on Wednesday to sign a memorandum of understanding establishing the alliance.
Neither the GDC nor the NPP had publicly announced the agreement at the time of publication, and the terms of the memorandum of understanding were not immediately available.
