The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) is expected to formally join the National People’s Party (NPP)-led political alliance on Wednesday, according to senior party sources familiar with the negotiations, marking a significant realignment ahead of The Gambia’s Dec. 5, 2026, presidential election.
Sources within the GDC told Kerr Fatou that Party Leader and Secretary General Mama Kandeh is scheduled to meet President Adama Barrow to sign a memorandum of understanding formalizing the alliance between the two parties.
The decision, the sources said, followed extensive internal consultations and was reached only after vigorous debate among members of the party’s leadership. They described the deliberations as robust, with differing opinions expressed over whether the GDC should align with the governing coalition.
According to the sources, the decision was ultimately approved but did not receive unanimous support, reflecting divisions within the party over its electoral strategy.
