National People’s Party Students’ Wing Responds to EFSCRJ’s Misleading Statement

Press Release

2nd November 2024

The National People’s Party Students’ Wing (NPPSW) most earnestly condemns the recent unfounded and inflammatory remarks issued by the EFSCRJ concerning the statements of His Excellency President Adama Barrow. Such pronouncements, laden with misconception and marked by an almost willful misinterpretation, egregiously distort the President’s steadfast dedication to the future of our beloved Gambia. It is, therefore, incumbent upon us to provide a necessary elucidation, both to preserve the dignity and honor of President Barrow and to uphold the integrity of the NPP.

President Barrow’s recent statements were metaphorical, aimed at conveying his dedication to The Gambia’s progress. Any claim that he intends to undermine the democratic process is a gross misinterpretation. The Gambian Constitution, specifically Section 39, unequivocally mandates that the President shall be elected by the people—a principle which President Barrow has respected as a foundation of democracy.

Section 63 further specifies that the President’s term is five years, elected by registered Gambian voters. President Barrow has honored this provision through free and fair elections, demonstrating his commitment to democratic principles. Moreover, Section 61(2) requires the President to protect and defend the Constitution, an oath President Barrow has upheld diligently by strengthening democratic institutions and promoting the rule of law.

Additionally, President Barrow’s right to freedom of expression is protected under Section 25 of the Constitution. Attempts to misrepresent his words or stifle his voice undermine the very democratic values the EFSCRJ claims to support.

The NPPSW stands by President Barrow’s right to express a desire for continuity within his party. His wish for the NPP to carry forward his legacy reflects his role as a dedicated leader invested in the nation’s enduring success, much like longstanding political parties in democracies worldwide. The misleading and provocative statements from the EFSCRJ not only misinterpret President Barrow’s words but also undermine constructive dialogue essential for national development.

The EFSCRJ’s sensationalism distracts from the real issues facing The Gambia. It is high time political actors focus on solutions for national progress rather than divisive rhetoric. President Barrow and the NPP remain resolute in their commitment to democracy, constitutionalism, and the Gambian people’s will.

As the proverb says, “A single bracelet does not jingle.” Together, let us work towards a united and prosperous Gambia.
