The KaSan Conservation Area is formally designated as a National Wildlife Reserve in The Gambia following the approval of the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Hon. Lamin B. Dibba, after a process that has taken four years, meeting all requirements and resulting in its gazetting.
The KaSan Conservation Company Limited (KCC), an ecotourism project owned by a Gambian registered company is located in the Njassang and Kaolong Forest Parks in the Central River Region (CRR).
The chief Promoter of the first PPP venture in Climate Change Adaptation and Conservation in the Gambia is Mr. Bakary K. Jammeh who doubles as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company.
“The public private community partnership between the KCC management and the Government of The Gambia will protect the environment, wildlife, and forest; empower and involve the community in the management of the ecosystem; create jobs; increase rural livelihood opportunities; and involve all stakeholders,” Mr. Bakary K. Jammeh said.
“The KaSan project is a sustainable approach to conservation through ecosystem services development throughout the Gambia and tourism product diversification and development. It will benefit present and future generations. The project will complement the development goals of The Gambia as enshrined in the National Development Plan 2018 – 20121.”
Mr. Jammeh further posited that the KCC will establish a Wildlife Sanctuary & Riverside Safari Lodge in The Gambia, noting that the business name will be KaSan Conservation Area and Koba Lodge. The project will contribute to repositioning The Gambia as a leading new destination for ecological tourism.
“The Koba Lodge accommodations will be set up in accordance with ecological responsible standards of people, planet and profit, were both nature and people will benefit.
The project will include a facility for education and research for both Gambian and overseas students. This will be achieved through collaboration between the KCC, the University of The Gambia and international universities.
Gambians will have the opportunity to see nature, in the country, as it was in the past – how animals live in their original and natural environment,” he concluded.
