The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has approved the registration of two new political parties after determining that both met the requirements set out by the commission.
Credible sources told Kerr Fatou that the commissioners met on Wednesday and endorsed the registration of the two parties.
Contacted for comment, IEC Chairman Joseph Colley confirmed the development but declined to disclose the names of the parties.
He said the commission would invite the parties to an official ceremony next week.
Colley also dismissed a press release currently circulating on Facebook, saying it did not originate from the IEC.
He urged the public to disregard the document, stressing that any official communication from the commission would be issued through the IEC’s authorised channels.
