Hon. Ceesay, shocked At Conditions Of The Remand Wing
By Buba Gagigo
The National Assembly Member for Serekunda West Constituency, Hon. Madi Ceesay, has raised concerns at the lack of improvement he observed at the remand wing of the Mile 2 prisons.
“I know over the years there has been a little bit of improvement as far as the main prison yards are concerned in mile 2. But then if you come to the remand wing, I can tell you there is no improvement at all. The congestion is still there, the unhealthy situations are still there, and even beyond the prisoners. Even the prison officers are in the same conditions. Go to their quarters, just behind the prison. It’s just like a swamp.
“I was there, and I was shocked that people that we are paying to take care of convicts can live under such circumstances. So, you talk about people’s rights and that people’s rights do not exclude prison officers. So, the situation, like I said, is bad, especially the remand wing. It is too congested. The diet has improved a little bit over time as to what used to happen because this is the second time the Human Rights Committee went around to mile 2,” he said in an interview with Malagen.
Hon. Madi Ceesay is the National Assembly Member for Serekunda West Constituency, and a member of the National Assembly Select Committee on Human Rights.
