The management of the Gambia Telecommunications Company Limited (GAMTEL) said the recent internet isolation was caused by the backup failure caused by a faulty card in Senegal.

“The public is hereby informed that there was an internet isolation that happened on the 4th January, 2022 at 01.17am and was restored around 09.45am. All incoming traffic was routed on the two back up links from Karang and Seleti respectively due to the primary link failure at ACE. The ACE cable repair is expected to be completed in  mid-January 2022.

“The backup failure was due to a faulty card at Toubakota, in Senegal. It is important to note that Toubakota was a single point of failure that affected both the Karang and Seleti links as both north and south links converge there. Thus, the reason for the complete isolation on the SONATEL link,” they said in a statement on Wednesday.
