Chairman, Gambia Market Union, Pa Jabbi Gassama has thanked the Inspector General of Police and the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) for helping them stop ‘Wantarr’ (Open market sale) in the build up to the Tobaski feast.
“We wanted to thank the IGP, because we went there before the Tobaski for him to help us stop the ‘Wanterr’. This is to free the highway and for everyone to go inside the market. The police have done a great job and we have seen there was no ‘wanterr’ this year (2022) not only in Serekunda, but also in all other markets in the Gambia. It helped a lot, because we didn’t experience a lot of stealing this year, and the movement of people was also easy. For more than Forty years, this has never happened in this country,” Pa Jabbi Gassama told Kerr Fatou on Tuesday.
The Chairman appealed to the Inspector General of Police to continue the operation, and explained how the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) was involved in the process of stopping ‘Wanterr’ this year.
“We thank the police and we are appealing for them to continue the operation. We contacted Talib Bensouda to stop the ‘wanterr’ because they are the ones that permit people. We asked him to write to us, which he did. We took that to the IGP but it didn’t only stop in Serekunda. The ‘wanterr’ was stopped throughout the country and everyone is happy with their job. We want them to continue the operation,” he concluded
‘Wanterr’, (Open market sale) is a seasonal business activity when goods are sold at giveaway prices. Mostly in the Gambia, it is done in the build up to Koriteh and Tobaski feasts.
