Gambia Decides To Immediately Deport 16 Pardoned Inmates
Gambia’s Justice Ministry announced the government’s decision to immediately deport the 16 non-Gambians in the country’s prisons granted amnesty recently.
The non-Gambians due for the instant repatriation include 10 Senegalese, 3 Conakry Guineans, 2 Nigerians, and 1 Indian, said a recent release from the ministry.
The development is brought about by President Barrow’s decision to release 57 convicts including 41 Gambians.
The move by Barrow is pursuant to the powers vested in him by Section 82 (1) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 1997 and the long-standing custom for the President to grant prerogative of mercy on deserving convicted prisoners in commemoration of the Muslim feast of Eid-ul Fitr 2021 locally called as “Koriteh”, Justice Ministry stated in the dispatch dated 12th May 2021.
