The government of The Gambia has confirmed a six-month extension to the current license for offshore blocks A2 and A5 to the end of June 2019.

According to operator FAR, this will allow sufficient time to fully evaluate results from the Samo-1 exploration well drilled late last year.

Jerreh Barrow, commissioner at the Ministry of Energy, confirmed to Kerr Fatou on Friday that “the information from FAR is true”.

This was also the first well drilled offshore Gambia in more than 40 years, taking 25 days to complete and reaching TD of 3,240 m (10,630 ft).

Interpretation of the wireline logs indicated that the main target horizons were water-bearing, although there were oil shows at various levels which suggest access to an active hydrocarbon charge, FAR claimed.

In addition, the well encountered good reservoir and seal facies, so several key components for a successful prospect appear to be present.

The ongoing interpretation will help unlock any remaining hydrocarbon potential in the area, FAR added.
