The Brikama Magistrate Court will tomorrow, Thursday, 9 October 2025, open a coroner’s inquest into the controversial death of Omar Badjie, a resident of Mandinari Village.

The inquiry, ordered by Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow, will be presided over by Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy, who has been formally appointed as the coroner for the proceedings.

Badjie’s death has drawn significant public attention following conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances of his demise. He was pronounced dead on 26 September 2025, after what was described as an encounter with the police.

According to an eyewitness, Omar Badjie allegedly died while in police custody. However, police authorities have denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he fell during a hot pursuit and was later pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Tomorrow’s inquest, scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Brikama Magistrate Court, will aim to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine the exact cause of death.

In a formal notice dated 6 October 2025, Principal Magistrate Mendy informed the family of the late Omar Badjie about the commencement of proceedings. Copies of the notice were also forwarded to the Chief Justice, the Judicial Secretary, and the Registrar of the Brikama Magistrate Court.

The court has urged full cooperation from all individuals with relevant information about the case, appealing to anyone with knowledge of the incident to appear before the inquest and assist the court in its investigation.
