Lawyer Assan Martin has said ongoing opposition coalition discussions are currently focused on establishing a solid framework, cautioning that the presidency will not be handed to any individual “on a silver platter” if the alliance succeeds.

“Now the stages we are in, we are trying to build the unity and coalition frameworks; then later we will build the coalition manifesto, and then address the leadership issues,” he stated.

Speaking on Kerr Fatou’s The Brunch program, Martin stressed that stakeholders are determined to avoid past mistakes by ensuring the coalition is carefully structured and durable beyond any political transition. He noted that the process is deliberate and time-consuming because of the need to create a stable and sustainable alliance.

According to him, approximately 95 percent of opposition parties are engaged in the discussions. He urged patience, emphasizing that coalition-building requires persistence and careful planning. He added that a strong framework is essential to ensure that any eventual leader remains committed to the principles of the struggle.

Martin expressed optimism about the progress of the talks, describing them as constructive and encouraging.

“The talks are going smoothly. We are very hopeful that a coalition will come into play. From the sprite that we have, almost everybody is seeing the country before our individual parties or movements; that is promising. We are all looking at how to build a framework that is going to be based on Unity.”

He characterized the coalition effort as a national “rescue mission,” pointing to governance challenges and institutional weaknesses as key motivations for the alliance.

“Everyone understands what is at stake—institutional failures and governance issues among them. The spirit is for Gambians to come together and determine how best to salvage the country,” he added.

Martin further warned that a fragmented opposition would ultimately benefit the incumbent, and urged political actors to move beyond personal ambitions for the presidency in favor of national interest and reform.
