Professor Yerro Mballow, Chairman of the Coalition Taskforce Mediation Committee (CTMC), the body spearheading opposition coalition efforts in The Gambia, has disclosed that all opposition entities are currently engaged in coalition discussions, with the exception of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS).
According to Mballow, PDOIS has indicated that it is presently involved in separate consultations and will determine its position after concluding those engagements.
Speaking in an interview on Bitilo, Mballow revealed that approximately 22 opposition groups are participating in the ongoing coalition talks. He added that other coalition-building groups not currently involved have expressed interest in joining the process at a later stage to strengthen unity among opposition forces.
“Coalition-building groups that are not with us inform us they will come for us to be one, solidify, and consolidate,” he stated.
Mballow dismissed assertions by President Adama Barrow and his allies that an opposition coalition would not materialize. He maintained that ongoing negotiations demonstrate clear progress and increase the likelihood of a unified front.
He emphasized that coalition-building remains the most viable strategy for unseating the incumbent administration. “I am confident there will be a coalition. In fact, the most effective way to defeat this administration is through a united opposition. Even if three or four parties come together, that alone could significantly challenge President Barrow,” he stated.
Expressing optimism about the process, Mballow said the coalition efforts he is leading are on course and positioned to secure victory in the 2026 presidential election.
