The United Democratic Party on Monday held an awards ceremony at its bureau in Manjai as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, honoring longtime members, diaspora supporters and others who have contributed to the party over the past three decades.
The ceremony, held on Sept. 7, brought together party officials, members and supporters and included posthumous recognition for several founding members.
Veteran party members Tata Camara, Kebba K. Barrow, Amadou Sanneh and Amadou Sheikh Taal were among those honored.
The party also recognized diaspora supporters, including Mbemba Jagne and Haja Fatou Ganes of Spain, as well as Mboge Saidykhan and Alagie Wassa Janneh of the United States.
Members of the UDP’s differently abled wing — Ndey Saine, Haruna Drammeh and Jarga Mbowe — were also honored.
Posthumous awards were presented to Dr. Lamin Sidat Jobe, Alagie Kebba Saine, Alh. Sainey Jammeh, Ramou Lowe, Kawunding Danjo, Abdou Jobe, Mass Jobe, Mbakoyo Suso, Alh. Tamba Suso and Alh. Jahay Suso for their roles in building the party.
Speaking at the ceremony, the UDP secretary general and party leader, Ousainu Darboe, said the party was founded 30 years ago with a commitment to building a better Gambia — a mission he said remains unfinished.
“Our celebrations have come to an end. But our quest for a better Gambia is still on,” Darboe said.
He urged party members to remain focused despite the challenges ahead, expressing confidence that the UDP could overcome the obstacles confronting it as it continues what he described as its effort to put the country on a better path.
Darboe characterized the party’s three-decade history as one marked not simply by celebration, but by determination, resilience and commitment. He praised members for sustaining the party through the years and remaining committed to its objectives.
Drawing on the UDP’s experience over the past 30 years, Darboe said the party was better positioned to pursue its goal of national progress.
He thanked members and supporters for their dedication and urged them to carry the momentum of the anniversary celebrations into the party’s continuing political work.
