The Gambian government has secured a $100 million trade finance facility from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, or BADEA, aimed at helping businesses finance imports of essential goods and commodities, the government announced.

The agreement was signed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by Finance Minister Seedy Keita and BADEA President Abdullah Al-Musabbeh, according to the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services.

The financing is intended to give Gambian businesses greater access to funds for importing essential commodities, helping maintain supplies in the domestic market while supporting trade and broader economic activity.

“This is really good for Gambian businesses, but also for Gambian trade and commerce,” the information minister said.

He said the facility could help importers navigate disruptions in global supply chains and ensure that essential goods remain available to consumers.

The agreement comes amid heightened concerns over international shipping and supply chains stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. The minister said disruptions affecting major trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have placed additional pressure on the movement of goods and commodities.

“This is important, particularly during this period when we have this war in the Middle East that has put enormous strain on supply chain logistics,” he said.

The government said the facility is expected to ease some of those pressures by improving access to trade financing for Gambian businesses that rely on imported goods.
