The National Assembly Select Committee investigating the sale and disposal of assets belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh has directed Accountant General Agnes Macaulay to submit all outstanding documents within 24 hours.

Macaulay appeared before the committee on Monday for the first time, where she presented partial documentation from her office. These included Trust Bank account statements, reconciliations of collections and deposits, and a list of payees with corresponding amounts collected.

She explained that funds generated at subsidiary levels were initially deposited into commercial bank accounts before being transferred to the Central Bank of The Gambia.

“All collections that are done through the sub-subsidiary are deposited at that sub-subsidiary bank, a commercial bank account, whereby these funds will be transferred to central banks in the CRS,” Macaulay told the committee.

However, lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with the delays in her response to earlier summons. The committee noted that although she was instructed on July 3, 2025, to provide the documents, her office only submitted them on August 20.

Macaulay attributed the delay to the extensive collation process and competing requests from different government institutions, including the Ministry of Justice.

“At a point, the Ministry of Justice requested the documentation, and we were working on that, and then, all of a sudden, we had another request from the select committee, so the running around was a lot,” she explained.

Committee Chairperson Hon. Abdoulie Ceesay criticized the Accountant General for what he described as a lack of seriousness in cooperating with the inquiry.

“You have not even appeared before the panel of investigators to give your statement. A letter was sent to you; you received it, but you neither communicated nor appeared. That means you are not taking the work of this committee seriously,” Ceesay told her.

The chairperson further ordered Macaulay to provide all documents relating to Jammeh, the Janneh Commission, and their associates, warning that failure to comply would compel the committee to invoke relevant constitutional provisions with “very serious consequences” for her as the country’s Accountant General.

Macaulay conceded that the records she presented were incomplete and assured the committee she would consult her deputies to gather the remaining files for submission.
