The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 62 suspected irregular migrants, including six minors, during a joint operation in Tanji and Brufut Ghana Town on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the department, the operation was conducted by officers from its Tanji-based Border Patrol and Migration Management Units in collaboration with the Gambia Police Force.
The intercepted group comprised 25 Gambians, 22 Senegalese, 11 Malians, two Ivorians, and two Guineans.
The department said the group included 51 males, five females, and six minors.
“The intercepted migrants are being profiled and processed at the GID Migration Centre in Tanji while receiving humanitarian assistance from the Gambia Red Cross Society,” the department said.
The GID did not provide details about the migrants’ intended destination or the circumstances surrounding their interception.
Irregular migration, commonly referred to in The Gambia as the “backway,” remains a concern as migrants continue to attempt journeys toward Europe through unofficial routes.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to combating irregular migration through continued cooperation with national and international partners.
