The chairman of the Coalition Mediation Committee, Prof. Yerro Mballow, has thanked the United Democratic Party and the Gambia Democratic Congress for their participation in talks to form a unified opposition coalition ahead of next year’s presidential election, following the withdrawal of both parties from the process.
The message came hours after the committee’s vice chairman, Momodou Satou Dibba, resigned, citing disagreement over the adoption of a one-entity, one-vote system for the negotiations.
The UDP had earlier announced its departure from the Coalition 2026 talks, a move that leaves the mediation committee to continue engaging with the remaining political parties. The committee is also tracking reports of a potential alliance between the GDC and the ruling party, which has not yet been formally confirmed.
In a letter dated July 28 and addressed to Mr. Dibba, Prof. Mballow said the committee appreciated the contributions of the UDP, the GDC and other stakeholders since talks began on April 18. He acknowledged that both parties had made the decision to withdraw from the negotiations.
Prof. Mballow said the involvement of the UDP and GDC in the process reflected a genuine effort to build unity among opposition parties before the 2026 elections.
“Your engagement demonstrated a genuine desire to seek unity among opposition parties ahead of the 2026 elections, and for that the committee remains grateful,” he wrote.
He closed the letter by extending best wishes to the leadership and membership of both parties in their future political endeavors.
