The leader of the APP-Sobeya political party, Essa Mbye Faal, sharply criticized the government of Adama Barrow, arguing that its investment in agriculture falls far short of what is needed to confront widespread food insecurity.
Speaking at a political gathering in Foni, Mr. Faal described food insecurity as the country’s most pressing challenge and said the government’s allocation of 19 million euros to the agricultural sector this year reflected a lack of strategic vision.
“This shows that this government does not have a vision for the country,” he said.
Mr. Faal argued that The Gambia’s long-term economic prospects depend on its ability to achieve food self-sufficiency, warning that meaningful development would remain elusive if the country continued to rely heavily on imports.
He also accused the Barrow administration of corruption and mismanagement, claiming that public resources were being diverted at the expense of national development. “They are stealing from you and your children,” he said, without providing specific evidence.
Turning to the upcoming presidential election scheduled for December 5, Mr. Faal urged voters to remove President Barrow from office, using sharp rhetoric to characterize the current administration. He promised that an APP-Sobeya government would prioritize infrastructure development and expand employment opportunities, including for graduates of Arabic schools.
Mr. Faal said that, if elected, his administration would undertake road construction projects in Foni and invest in youth development initiatives. He noted that his party had already distributed sports equipment in the area as part of its outreach efforts.
