The Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), Sulayman S. Janneh, has said the Stingcorner–Mandinaba bypass is being considered for conversion into a toll road as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion along the busy Banjul–Brikama corridor.

Speaking in a recent interview on QTV, Mr. Janneh said preparations were underway and indicated that work on the initiative is expected to commence before the end of 2026.

He noted that The Gambia currently has no toll roads, arguing that introducing such infrastructure could provide a new source of revenue for road development and maintenance.

“You have to understand, The Gambia doesn’t even have one single toll road yet. Not one single one, and these are options that we can explore that will virtually bring revenue,” he said.

Mr. Janneh also disclosed that the authority is considering extending the toll road model to sections of the OIC Highway following the completion of its third phase, describing it as part of broader efforts to mobilize financing for national infrastructure development.

He further said the NRA has “sufficient funding avenues,” adding that the institution has untapped opportunities for infrastructure financing.

Unlike road agencies in some other countries that rely heavily on borrowing, he said, the NRA is not burdened by debt and remains in a strong position to access funding due to its credibility.

“We do have opportunities that have never been tapped into,” he said, adding that the authority has the capacity to secure financing for priority projects.
