Finance Minister Seedy Keita has publicly endorsed President Adama Barrow’s bid for a second elected term, urging Gambians to vote for the incumbent in the 2026 presidential election so his administration can continue implementing reforms aimed at transforming the country.
Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Mr. Keita said he makes no apology for supporting President Barrow’s re-election campaign, arguing that another term would enable the government to build on its development agenda.
“I am pro-Barrow. I want Gambians to vote for the president so that in 2026 we will win with a resounding success. In 2027, the president will usher in his new reforms to transform The Gambia, and that one I have no apology for,” Mr. Keita said.
The finance minister also addressed the political role of cabinet ministers, saying that members of the Cabinet are inherently political officeholders, regardless of their professional backgrounds before joining government.
Mr. Keita noted that while much of his career had been spent in technical and international positions, his current role as finance minister is a political appointment that carries both policy and political responsibilities.
He acknowledged that the government still faces challenges but said nation-building is an ongoing process requiring continuity and public support.
“We are not perfect. It is a work in progress, nation building, but one thing we will underscore is that Gambians should not underestimate the leadership they have; they have a patient leader who is committed to developing this country. Let them allow him to proceed and transform The Gambia for the welfare and well-being of Gambians,” he said.
Mr. Keita’s remarks amount to one of his strongest public endorsements yet of President Barrow’s re-election campaign, as political parties and prospective candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2026 presidential election.
