The Minister of Health Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh has said that Gambia government is committed to improving the country’s health care system.
“The government is committed to improving the health care system in this country. We have started the renovation of health care facilities and the government is procuring a number of oxygen systems so that the hospitals will have their own oxygen generators, which will be supplying oxygen directly to the wards in the hospitals.”
Dr. Samateh also said the government ‘is buying 70 ambulances’ for the referral of patients to ease their movements to health centres and hospitals; saying the ambulances will be used to facilitate the timely movement of pregnant women to the hospitals.
Dr. Samateh makes these remarks at the inauguration of a recovery room for patients at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) Operation Theatre.
Speaking further at the occasion, the Minister assured the right utilisation of funds at the ministry for the improvement of the country’s health sector.
“Even though, we inherited a bad institution we will make sure that every butute is spent on what is meant for the improvement of the health care system in The Gambia.”
On the recent successful knee surgery at EFSTH, Samateh said the Government will make sure that more knee and hip replacement surgeries are done in this [EFSTH] hospital.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Kebba S Marenah, Head of Surgery at EFSTH, who led the first ever successful knee replacement surgery said the government should make the working environment conducive for staff at the facility.
“It is not only about renovation of facilities, but the welfare of doctors and nurses at the hospital should be improved as they play a very crucial roles in the Gambia.”
Mr. Sulayman Jallow, Head of Anaesthesia and Theatre at EFSTH lauded the refurbishment of the recovery room; saying it is timely.
