The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Family and Social Services on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation on women’s empowerment, child protection, and social welfare programs.

The agreement was signed on March 11, 2026, at the Permanent Mission of Türkiye to the United Nations in New York City.

The accord was signed by Fatou Kinteh, The Gambia’s minister for gender, children, and social welfare, and Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, Türkiye’s minister of family and social services.

According to a statement shared on the ministry’s social media platforms, the agreement outlines areas of cooperation, including women’s empowerment, child protection, family support initiatives, and broader social welfare programs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Kinteh said the partnership would create opportunities for both countries to exchange experience, expertise, and best practices in addressing gender inequalities, strengthening child protection systems, and improving social welfare services.

“The Turkish side reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the well-being of families, women, children, and other vulnerable groups,” the ministry said in the statement.

Officials said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment by both governments to promote gender equality, strengthen family institutions, and improve the overall well-being of their citizens. The agreement is also expected to open new avenues for technical cooperation and institutional partnerships between the two countries.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including the Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, Mr. Alieu Njie; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lang Yabou; Momodou Lamin Bah, Ambassador to the United States; and Lamin Dibba, Ambassador to the United Nations.
