Lawyer Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has been awarded the 2025 Global Legacy in Statesmanship and Peace Award in recognition of his lifelong commitment to peace, justice, and good governance.

The award was presented to him in Helsinki, Finland, marking an international acknowledgment of his contributions to democracy and human rights.

In his acceptance speech, Darboe described the honor as deeply humbling. He reflected on the responsibilities he assumed upon completing his legal studies, noting that Gambians placed immense trust in him during difficult times.

“A burden of hope by ordinary Gambians who were suffering from an orthodox behavior of the executive depriving them of their dues,” he said.

Darboe emphasized that he has always felt compelled to speak for the underprivileged and voiceless, ensuring that their rights are safeguarded from abuse.

“This is not just a duty, but a sacred trust, earned through dedication and a commitment to justice. To this day, I continue to carry this burden of hope and trust,” he added.

A central figure in Gambian politics, Darboe is the leader of the country’s main opposition party. He previously served as vice president under President Adama Barrow from 2018 to 2019 and also held the position of minister of foreign affairs.
