The former president of the Gambia Press Union, Bai Emile Touray, has handed over the mantle of leadership of the Union to new president Sheriff Bojang on Friday.

At a ceremony held at the Union, Touray who finished his two three-year term hands over the operational documents of the institution to incoming executive.

The new GPU board members were taken through various projects that are ongoing, accounts of the union and an inventory of its assets, among others.

“A lot of confidence is placed on you… The success or failure of your administration depends on whether or not you work together as a team,” said Touray to the incoming executive members.

The GPU has been one of Gambia’s most effective trade unions, even under the former dictator Yahya Jammeh.

Not only did the institution defended the interests of its members in the newsrooms but it also stood for them when they ran into trouble with government.

New president Bojang said that excellent track record will be kept and improved upon.

“The challenge before us is very doable,” said Bojang. “Emile has brought a good deal of success and sanity in GPU and it is my fervent hope that we will take it further from there.”
