As the Gambia prepares to host the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkish government has donated €130, 000 worth of equipment to the public broadcaster to enhance its news coverage.

This is the second time in just under five years Turkish state will make such donations to the state broadcaster. Couple of months ago, similar donations were made to the country’s army, judiciary and the justice ministry

The new equipment include twelve cameras, new laptops and other studios gadgets.

The director general of the state broadcaster, Abdou MK Touray, said the donations came at a time when they are struggling with inadequate cameras.

“These are very essential equipment for our operations as a public broadcaster… This is the second time Turkey is making such donations to GRTS,” said Touray.

“We now have twelve new cameras… We are limited with cameras and the demand on cameras has always been high.”

The handing over ceremony happened at the communication ministry of the Gambia. The communication minister Ebrima Sillah praised the donation as a “great initiative”

The Turkish ambassador to the Gambia, Ismail Sefa Yuceer, who presided over the handing over ceremony said the new equipment will “enhance the work of the GRTS ahead of the OIC summit”.

Gambia host the OIC summit next year.

“It is our hope that relations with the GRTS will further be strengthened,” added ambassador Yuceer.
