The U.S. State Department said former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh and members of his immediate family are now ineligible for entry into the United States.

“The United States is committed to combating corruption, increasing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and promoting good governance globally,” stated a part of the release.

“The United States stands with the government of The Gambia, its people, and civil society in support of The Gambia’s transition towards greater transparency, accountability, and democratic governance, for the benefit of all Gambians.”

The sanction comes almost two years after Jammeh was forced into exile in Equatorial Guinea following his shocking election defeat.

The State Department said he’s now being banned from entry under a category that applies to foreign government officials who are believed to have committed “significant corruption or a gross violation of human rights.”

In addition to Jammeh, his wife Zineb, and their daughter Mariam and son Muhammad are also being blocked.
