Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the Organising Secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) refutes speculations about his intention to establish a new political party.

Despite longstanding rumors suggesting his interest in the 2026 presidential election, recent rumors emerged, alleging that Mayor Bensouda was contemplating the formation of his own political entity.

In a WhatsApp audio message on Sunday, Bensouda addressed the claims, affirming his allegiance to the UDP and its leader, Ousainou Darboe. He assured UDP members of his unwavering commitment to the party, dismissing any notion of initiating or joining another political group.

“I’ve received numerous audio messages regarding the United Democratic Party and the Gambia. Firstly, I want to affirm my commitment to the UDP; I am a member now and for the foreseeable future. Ousainou Darboe remains my Party leader, and I intend to continue following him now and for the foreseeable future. I have not encountered any reasons or excuses from Ousainou Darboe that would prompt me to cease my support for him. He said in a WhatsApp audio released on Sunday.

While acknowledging his democratic right to associate with any party, run as an independent candidate, or establish a new party, Bensouda underscored his conscious choice to align with the UDP. He urged party members to remain united and focused on developing The Gambia.

“I am telling my fellow UDP members that I am a Citizen of the Gambia, that it is my full Democratic right to join any party of my choosing, it is my full Democratic right to start a political party if I want, and it is my full Democratic right to be an independent politician if I want to. All that being said, I have chosen to align myself with UDP, and presently, Lawyer Ousainu Darboe serves as my leader, a commitment I foresee continuing into the future. Darboe has made significant sacrifices for the liberation of The Gambia, contributing immensely to the establishment and preservation of our democracy. While being a part of a substantial entity like UDP entails a diversity of agendas, varying opinions among its members, and a multitude of followers, I urge fellow party members to prioritize unity. It is crucial for us to collaborate in the development of The Gambia and work towards rescuing it from its current state.” Talib said.

As the National Organising Secretary of the UDP, Bensouda underscored his dedication to ensuring the party’s success in the 2026 presidential election. He urged UDP supporters to unite for Gambia’s development, cautioning against allowing divisive decisions to create discord within the party.

Addressing the rumors directly, Bensouda denied ever expressing intentions to initiate or join another party. He stressed that any claims suggesting otherwise were false and unfounded.

I would like to share a piece of advice with all supporters of UDP, let us not allow the ugly head of division come between us. As the National Organising Secretary of UDP, my primary objective is to ensure our success in the presidential election of 2026. If reaching out to anyone can contribute to the UDP’s victory, I am committed to doing so. I am dedicated to resolving any issues that may hinder party unity and actively seeking opportunities for development. It is essential for UDP supporters to understand that, at no point, have I, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, communicated any intention to form a new party or join another one. Any claim suggesting otherwise is entirely false and untrue,” he said.

Bensouda concluded by reiterating his allegiance to the UDP and its leader, Ousainou Darboe, both in the present and foreseeable future. He acknowledged the passionate nature of UDP members and urged caution in interpreting information, emphasizing the need for mindfulness to sustain the party’s strength and longevity. Bensouda expressed forgiveness for those who may have raised concerns about him and affirmed his commitment to treating all UDP members as brothers and sisters.

“I would also advise the UDP. UDP is an emotionally invested entity, a group that operates from the heart. While UDP has undergone a painful history, following one’s heart can have both positive and negative consequences. The advantage lies in the party’s reputation for honesty. However, embracing information too personally can lead to unintended consequences, as we may believe we are acting in the best interest.

“UDP is a formidable political force, but it is essential to acknowledge that there were numerous parties before UDP, and there will be many after. For any party aspiring to endure and remain robust, mindfulness is crucial. People have expressed their opinions, often driven by their genuine concern for Talib Bensouda. I extend my forgiveness to all who have spoken, and I am earnestly seeking your forgiveness in return. Recognize that we are a family, and I pledge to treat each of you as my brothers and sisters, regardless of the circumstances.” he said.
