Sierra Leone Establishes Committee To Probe Violent Protests

A Special Investigation Committee has been established by Sierra Leone to probe into the 10th August Protests in the country.

“Accordingly, it has pleased His Excellency Brigadier General (Rtd.) Dr. Julius Maada Bio to announce the establishment of a Special Investigation Committee to examine both the immediate and underlying causes, sources of financing, execution and consequences of the insurrection, as well as the response of security forces,” a dispatch by the State House press secretary stated.

The establishment of the committee followed President Bio’s post-protests address to the Nation on 12th August 2022 during which he assured that an investigation would be launched into the violent protests.

The 15-member committee chaired by Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai Esq. comprised people from the media, legal, security and other disciplines.

The Special Investigation Committee members are Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai Esq., Chairman; Lawrence L. Bassie (Security Sector Expert), Secretary; Executive Director, Legal Aid Board; National Security Coordinator, Office of National Security; President, Sierra Leone Association of Journalists; President, Sierra Leone Bar Association; Executive Director, Defence for Children International; National President, Women’s Forum, Sierra Leone 9; President, Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone; National Chairman, Council of Paramount Chiefs; Chairman, Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion; Chairman, Political Party Registration Commission; Chairman, Independent Media Commission; Chairman, Retired Senior Police Officers’ Association; Chairman, Sierra Leone Ex-Servicemen’s Association, stated the dispatch dated 24th August 2022.
