IEC Chairman
The Independent Electoral Commission [IEC] has announced the date for the commencement of nomination of candidates for the Gambia’s December 4 presidential election.
“The public is hereby informed that the IEC, acting under Section 47 of the [1997] Constitution and 42(2) of the Elections Act will receive nomination of candidates for the said [December 4] election of President of the Republic of The Gambia from 30th October 2021 to 5th November 2021 between the hours of 8 o’clock in the forenoon and 4 o’clock in the afternoon at the IEC headquarters, Bertil Harding Highway,” IEC said in a statement on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the commission also announced the date of the campaign period for the said candidates.
“In exercise of its powers given in Section 85 of the Elections Act, the IEC wishes to announce that the campaign period for the said election will be held from Tuesday, 9th November 2021 to Thursday, 2nd December 2021,” the statement added.
The statement said Alieu Momarr Njai, the IEC Chairman, is appointed as the Returning Officer for the December 4 presidential election, as per Section 5(2) of the Elections Act.
It concluded that nomination papers can be collected from the commission’s office effective 30thSeptember.
