The Gambia Police Force has denied a request by residents of Salagi to hold a protest against the recent demolition of their homes, citing security concerns.

“Office of the Inspector General of Police acknowledges receipt of your missive in relation to the captioned subject. Please be informed that your permit request is not approved due to security reasons. Kindly accept assurance of the Inspector-General of Police in the maintenance of peace and security at all times,” the IGP office said in a letter to the Salagi residents.

The protest was intended to voice opposition to demolitions carried out by the Department of Physical Planning, which claims that the affected residents had constructed homes and fences on public land without proper authorization. The demolitions have left hundreds of families displaced, sparking frustration and calls for accountability from the affected community.
