The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has demanded a public apology from the Gambia Telecommunications Company Limited (GAMTEL) after associating NAWEC with Doku Group, who GAMTEL alleged cut their fibre cable in Brufut.

NAWEC issued a statement on Sunday clarifying that DOKU Group is not engaged in any work on its behalf around Brufut. The statement called GAMTEL’s inclusion of NAWEC in its statement “misleading and malicious” and emphasized that Doku Group is not associated with any projects on NAWEC’s behalf around Brufut.

“NAWEC Wishes to clarify to the public that Doku Group is not engaged in any works on its behalf around Brufut. The inclusion of NAWEC in the statement is both misleading and malicious. We emphasize that DOKU Group is not associated with any projects on our behalf around Brufut. It is crucial for GAMTEL to verify facts with NAWEC management before making such statements. The ongoing OIC road works and pipe relocations in Brufut fall under the jurisdiction of the NRA, a fact well-known to GAMTEL,” NAWEC said on Sunday.

NAWEC concluded its statement by strongly urging GAMTEL to issue a public apology to rectify the inaccuracies and preserve NAWEC’s reputation. The company said it believes that addressing these misunderstandings promptly is essential for maintaining transparency, accuracy, and trust within the community.

“In order to rectify the inaccuracies and preserve NAWEC’s reputation, we strongly urge GAMTEL to issue a public apology. We believe that addressing these misunderstandings promptly is essential for maintaining transparency, accuracy, and trust within the community.”

Doku Group also denied GAMTEL’s allegations in a response posted on its Facebook page. The company said it is “extremely disappointed by the false accusations, especially from a Government institution,” and reiterated its commitment to the Gambia.

“Doku Group is aware of an accusation made by GAMTEL. We have responded and asked them to remove their false and misleading post. We are extremely disappointed by the false accusations, especially from a Government institution.  Doku Group remains committed to the Gambia, we are doing our best,” they said.
