The staff of MA Kharafi now MAKFOODS have today commenced a sit-down strike until their demands are met.
Some of the staff who further embarked on a peaceful protest expressed dissatisfaction with their financial manager, one Mr. Sabry.
“Everyone one is saying they don’t believe in him again. We cannot say for him to be sacked but we can demand for him to be replaced and someone who can work with us to be given to us,” said Mustapha Darboe the chairperson of MAKFOODS Ltd workers Committee.
On behalf of their Public Relation Officer, Abubacarr Camara said: “We know the challenges that The Gambians are facing here. First Mr. Sabry thinks he is better than us. He doesn’t recognize our efforts. If you see we are complaining about our contracts, here even if they caught you with one Irish potato, they will sack you.”
The striking employees of the company accused their finance manager, (Mr. Sabry) of delaying the fixed-term contracts of more than 22 farm employees; turning deaf ears and did not take any action to an INTERNAL MEMORANDUM written on 7th June 2021 and copied himself; and keeping and delaying their salaries with without any justification following approval for the payment of the workers on 24 of September 2021.
The MA.Kharafi financial manager, Mr. Sabry, could not be reached for comments on the allegations against him.
M.A. Kharafi & Sons now MAKFOODS is a Kuwait based multi-national company established in The Gambia in June 2003 with business activities such as agriculture, construction etc.
