The Gambian lawmakers have on Monday passed a motion establishing a working relations between the National Assembly and the lawmaking body of France.
A motion which was tabled by Muhammed Magasy, a representative of Basse constituency, was unanimously voted for by the lawmakers.
“The establishment of the aforesaid parliamentary friendship group between the two legislatures will enhance cooperation and render support to each other on key areas such as development cooperation, legislative support, governance, technical assistance, as well as further boost people-to-people relations among others,” a paragraph of the motion reads.
Gambia and France have enjoyed close relations since independence. However, during the presidency of former ruler Yahya Jammeh the two countries have suffered some problems in their relations.
Following the December election defeat of Jammeh, the two countries renewed ties and France reopened its embassy in Gambia.
During President Adama Barrow’s first visit to the country, France has pledged to support Gambia with over $50 million in aid.
The Franco-Gambia Friendship Group will consist of a chairperson and eight other members.
Membership to the Group will be nominated by the Committee of Selection in accordance with the Standing Orders of the lawmaking body of Gambia.
