The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has announced in a press release that Japan has approved a grant of D112,686,048 to support an agricultural land development project aimed at improving rice production in The Gambia. This funding comes through Japan’s Food Assistance Counterpart Fund.
The grant will support the project titled “Agricultural Land Development Project for Improving Rice Production.”
The initiative is designed to enhance agricultural productivity by developing arable land, establishing irrigation infrastructure, and implementing other related interventions to strengthen national food security.
According to the statement, the project aligns with The Gambia’s broader development goals, particularly the advancement of self-sufficiency in rice production.
“The Government of The Gambia deeply values its longstanding partnership with Japan, and seized this opportunity to convey its appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for their continuous support and contribution to The Gambia’s development,” they wrote.
The release further highlighted that this collaboration is a testament to the enduring commitment of both nations to fostering sustainable economic growth and social development.
