Hon. Almameh Gibba, the National Assembly Member for Foni Kansala, has declared his strong opposition to the 2024 draft constitution, stating that he is prepared to “bury it 40 feet deep.”

Speaking on the matter, Hon. Gibba expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of constitutional reform efforts, particularly following the failure of the 2020 draft constitution.

“My stand is very clear, when the government is not ready to take the right direction this will always be the end product. They failed us after spending millions on the 2020 draft constitution. They went and created their own draft constitution which I will never entertain. I had already consulted the people in my constituency when I saw it on our agenda. But 98 percent of the people I have consulted are not in support of it. They said it is a Barrow book and they don’t want it. Secondly, in terms of governance, if you preach about integrity and accountability, why bring a draft that doesn’t say the same thing? Is a waste of time and energy,” Hon. Gibba remarked.

The Foni Kansala NAM also criticized what he calls the influence of foreign organizations and Western interests, accusing them of meddling in the country’s internal affairs.

“I will not be part of that. They just want it to happen, they don’t care how it happens. A constitution that will not empower institutions, is not a good constitution. I will hold on to the 1997 constitution because it is better than the 2024 constitution. I can prove that, take an example. Both constitutions have entrenched in power, in the 2024 draft asset declaration is only when coming into office but when you come and steal and no one account you for that after leaving office,” he asserted.

Hon. Gibba also took aim at President Adama Barrow, alleging that his wealth had grown suspiciously during his tenure.

“We all know Barrow was in a hut in Mankamang Kunda, but today he has Mansions there. In less than 3years he built multi-million dollar story buildings. They confiscated everything from Jammeh, even his compound was taken and changed to the fourth infantry battalion. We are also advocating, that he will face the same in the next government. His compound will be the fifth infantry battalion. So they created a constitution to suit them and we will not be part of that. We are strongly ready with our arsenals to make sure we bury it 40 feet deep.” he concluded.
