The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 67 individuals attempting to undertake the irregular migration journey commonly referred to as the “backway” in Gunjur Madina Salam, the department announced in a press release.

According to the statement, the operation was carried out by the Border Patrol Unit (BPU) stationed at the Migration Management Unit (MMU) in Tanji. The group comprised 65 males and two females, including 61 Senegalese nationals and five Gambians.

The GID described the interception as a well-coordinated operation that underscores the department’s commitment to combating irregular migration and strengthening border governance.

“The well-coordinated interception demonstrates GID’s firm commitment towards curbing irregular migration and, through effective border governance directed at deterring smugglers from using the country as a point of transit to Europe,” the release stated.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration while intensifying efforts to discourage young people from embarking on the dangerous journey to Europe through irregular routes.

The GID further emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with communities and stakeholders to address the challenges of irregular migration and protect vulnerable individuals from the risks associated with human smuggling and unsafe migration practices.
