Edward Singhateh is accused of several state-sanction killings including the murder of former finance minister Ousman Koro Ceesay.

The secretariat of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has issued a statement on Tuesday clarifying the former minister, Edward Singhateh, is not working with the regional body.

Singhateh, a former defence minister and one of the leading soldiers that overthrew former president Dawda Kairaba Jawara, is accused of several killings in the country.

The former captain who later became a trained lawyer was appointed as the vice president of the ECOWAS Commission.

After several allegations emerged from country’s Truth Commission of Singhateh’s involvement in executions in the immediate aftermath of the coup, Gambians began taking interest in the whereabouts of the former minister.

“The ECOWAS Permanent mission in The Gambia therefore wishes to inform the general public that former Vice President, Mr. Edward Singhateh is no longer a staff of the ECOWAS Commission as purported by the Freedom Newspaper. The Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission is Mrs. Finda Koroma, a Sierra Leonean, who immediately took over from Mr. Edward Singhateh in 2018,” a part of the press release on Tuesday stated.
