The Brikama Area Council has earmarked over D8 million in its 2025 budget to fund scholarships for students across the West Coast Region, Chairman Yankuba Darboe announced this week.

In a statement shared via social media, Mr. Darboe described the allocation as a reflection of the council’s deepening commitment to education and youth empowerment, calling it a “significant step forward” in efforts to support students regardless of background or institution.“As part of our unwavering commitment to education and youth empowerment in the West Coast Region, we are proud to announce that the Brikama Area Council, under my leadership, has allocated over D8 million in the 2025 budget for student scholarships,” Mr. Darboe wrote.

The scholarship program, which supports both English and Arabic learning institutions, has already benefited more than 300 students in 2024. According to Mr. Darboe, the council intends to expand the initiative in the coming year by inviting new applicants while continuing support for existing beneficiaries.

“In 2024, over 300 students from both English and Arabic learning institutions received full scholarship packages through this initiative,” Mr. Darboe added.

With the new allocation, the Brikama Area Council aims to expand the program, inviting new applicants while ensuring continued support for returning students until they complete their academic programs.

“With the 2025 allocation, we aim to expand this impact by welcoming new applicants while continuing to support returning beneficiaries until they complete their programs,” he said.

Looking ahead, the council expects the scholarship program to benefit more than 600 students between 2024 and the end of 2025.
“We believe that by investing in education, we are investing in the future of our region and empowering the next generation to rise and thrive,” he said.
