Banjul Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe Rebukes Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally Over Protest Remarks

Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of the Banjul City Council (BCC), has sharply criticized Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally, describing him as “idle” and urging him to focus on his official responsibilities rather than political showmanship.
Her remarks come in response to recent comments by Minister Sabally, who warned that both Mayor Lowe and Essa Faal, leader of the APP-Sobeya party, could face arrest if they again participated in what he termed “unlawful protests.” The pair had recently visited a group of protesting youths to show solidarity, a move Sabally claimed amounted to incitement.
Speaking on Saturday in Janack village during the inauguration of a borehole at a women’s garden, Mayor Lowe expressed strong disapproval of the minister’s remarks.
“I don’t even want to dwell on the Agriculture Minister, but before he talks about Rohey Malick Lowe or anyone else, I urge him to visit the gardens,” she said. “He is so idle. Let him go to the farms and see the work women are doing. Politics should be left for its proper time. Enough is enough—this man is busy criticizing others instead of doing his job.”
Mayor Lowe challenged Sabally to engage with farmers and witness the hardships they endure, particularly women working under the hot sun.
“For God’s sake, go to the gardens and see how these women are suffering,” she continued. “Don’t say it’s the job of the Women’s Affairs Minister—this is your responsibility too. You can’t sit on platforms condemning others while ignoring your own duties.”
Lowe, who represents the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), also accused the minister of attempting to curry favor with President Adama Barrow, stating the president is likely uninterested in Sabally’s rhetoric.
“Stop trying to impress the president and start serving the people,” she said.
