The state has charged 6 natives of Gunjur with willful damages of private property and conspiracy to commit crime for removing the waste pipe of a Chinese company, Golden Lead, from the sea.

Activists in Gunjur said the Chinese company is discharging toxic waste water into the sea thus threatening their lives and the livelihood.

The young men including activist Dr Janneh were charged with willful damages of private property, conspiracy to commit crime and trespass, among others.

The charged environmental activists are Lamin Jassey, Alagie Kaku Bojang, Ousman Sanneh, Omar Darboe, Foday Darboe and Dr Scattred Janneh.

However, the activist denied any wrongdoing. “We were charged with the removal of the waste pipes…,” said Lamin Jassey.

But the activists have asked for time to prepare their defense.

The trial resumes on June 12 at noon.

They were bail with a bond of D400, 000 with two ID cards.
