The National Assembly’s Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC) has recommended cutting D61.9 million from the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) proposed 2027 budget, a move that would reduce the electoral body’s allocation from D669.7 million to approximately D607.8 million.

The proposed reduction, outlined in the committee’s consolidated report on the government’s 2027 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure, would affect only the commission’s recurrent expenditure, leaving its development budget unchanged.

“Following its review, the Committee proposed a reduction of the sum of D61,907,375 from the budget of the Independent Electoral Commission’s recurrent budget. However, the development budget remains unchanged,” the report stated.

The IEC had initially proposed a total budget of D669,704,458 for 2027. If lawmakers approve the committee’s recommendation, the commission’s allocation would fall to D607,797,083.

The report did not specify the reasons for the proposed reduction or identify which areas of the commission’s recurrent expenditure would be affected.

In a separate recommendation, FPAC proposed reallocating D800,000 within the Public Service Commission’s recurrent budget toward vehicle purchases.

The committee also recommended an additional D6.2 million for the purchase of two vehicles for the commission’s vice chairperson to support its operations.

The recommendations are part of FPAC’s broader scrutiny of proposed government spending for the 2027 fiscal year and remain subject to approval by the National Assembly.
