High Court Sentences Man To Death For Brufut Ghana Town Murder

The High Court has sentenced Ismaila Janneh to death after finding him guilty of the murder of Alieu Jallow in Brufut Ghana Town.
Delivering judgment before a packed courtroom, Justice Jaiteh convicted Mr. Janneh of murder and imposed the death penalty. The judge ordered that the sentence be carried out by the Minister of Justice either by hanging or by firing squad, in accordance with the law.
The case had attracted widespread public interest in Brufut, and the courtroom was filled with residents, relatives of both the victim and the convicted man, and other observers awaiting the verdict.
Mr. Janneh retains the right to appeal both his conviction and sentence before the Court of Appeal.
Although the court imposed the death penalty, The Gambia has observed a de facto moratorium on executions for several years. As a result, death sentences have not been carried out despite remaining part of the country’s criminal justice system.
The full text of Justice Jaiteh’s judgment is expected to be released.
