The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 35 individuals attempting irregular migration—locally referred to as the “backway”—at Mandala Lodge in Jinack Kajatta. The group comprised 15 adults and 20 minors.

According to the department, all those apprehended are nationals of Guinea. In recent years, The Gambia has increasingly served as a transit point for West African migrants seeking to reach Europe via dangerous sea routes.

In a related development, the GID’s North Bank Region Border Patrol Unit seized 124 gallons of fuel believed to be intended for use in an irregular migration operation in Jinack Kajatta.

“The operation was carried out through joint intelligence and collaboration with the Senegalese authorities. A Senegalese national linked to the consignment was escorted to Ginack Kajata, where the fuel had been concealed,” the department said in a statement.

The GID noted that these operations represent a significant step forward in its ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration and combat related transnational crimes.
