Omar Saibo Camara, spokesperson for Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) and a human rights activist, has cautioned political actors in The Gambia against engaging in tribal politics, warning that such practices could destabilize the country.

Speaking during an appearance on the Kerr Fatou show on Thursday, Camara urged politicians and political parties to refrain from hate speech, particularly as the country approaches an election year.

He emphasized the need for urgent legal reforms to address harmful political rhetoric, including the establishment of a law reform commission to review and strengthen existing legislation.

“Since there is no reform or a new constitution, we should make sure there is a law reform commission. This is something that should have been in the pipeline. A law reform commission will be able to insert and reform certain legal frameworks to ensure some of these things are stopped,” he stated.

Camara further stressed the importance of enacting specific laws to criminalize hate speech and regulate political messaging, especially during election periods.

He also called on President Adama Barrow to clearly distinguish his role as head of state from partisan political activities, urging greater caution in public communications.

“President Barrow should be careful of the statements issued on his platforms. Adama Barrow is not just a politician; he is the president of the Republic of the Gambia, and he owes us peace, unity, and respect beyond his political cap,” Camara stated.

He added that the president has a responsibility to serve all Gambians, regardless of political affiliation, particularly when attending state-sponsored events. “He needs to wear that cap, especially when he goes to programs that is state-sponsored.”

Camara concluded by underscoring the need for national cohesion and vigilance to prevent actions that could lead to instability or conflict.
