The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 109 irregular migrants in a coordinated operation across five communities, as authorities continue efforts to curb attempts to use The Gambia as a departure point for irregular migration to Europe.

In a press release, the department said its Border Patrol Unit, based at the Tanji Migration Management Unit, carried out the operation leading to the interception of the group in Foni Bullock, Mandinaba, Brikama, Sanyang, and Gunjur.

According to GID, the intercepted individuals comprised 41 Gambians, 44 Senegalese, 20 Malians, 4 Ivorian nationals, 2 Guineans, and 2 Bangladeshi nationals.

“The interception underscores The Gambia Immigration Department’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives while promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration,” the statement noted.

Despite intensified enforcement measures, irregular migration—commonly referred to as the “backway”—remains a persistent challenge in The Gambia. The trend is largely driven by limited economic opportunities and high youth unemployment. The country also continues to serve as a transit corridor for migrants from across West Africa, many of whom pass through its coastal routes in an effort to reach Europe.
